Carried over the doorstep the real meaning!

Long ago when marriages were not necessarily voluntary, brides were forcibly carried into the couples new home.  It was thought demons dwelled on the newlyweds doorstep and it was bad luck for the bride to trip on the threshold, so the groom carried his bride over the threshold to protect her.
